Field Trips: FAQ

What is the Pre-Trip Outreach?
The Monday prior to your field experience, a Bluff Lake Instructor will come to your class. During this pre-trip visit we will talk with the students about what to bring, provide background information, conduct a pre-trip assessment and group activities, and answer any questions.

How many students can my school bring at a time?
We can offer our education programs to 65 students at a time. Please schedule additional days for education programs if your group has more than 65 students.

Do the students need to be broken into groups?
Yes, the entire field trip group should be broken into three roughly even groups (for example: two classes with 30 students each would be broken into groups of 20). However, it depends on how many staff/volunteers we have working that day. We will do our best to let you know ahead of time how many groups are needed.

How much does a program cost?
Field Trips cost $8 per student.  Our Customized Education Program cost $8 per student for each visit to our site as well as additional costs for development and in-school visits.  See below for information about Scholarships.

Are there Scholarships available?
Yes! Bluff Lake Education Programs are free for public schools with Title I status and/or 50% or more student enrollment in the free/reduced lunch program. These schools may also qualify for a partial reimbursement of school bus expense. All other schools will be invoiced at $8.00 per student and will be responsible for their transportation expenses.

What about Transportation?
Schools are responsible for providing their own transportation. We require schools to provide a bus request/route number in order to receive field trip confirmation. (BLNC does reimburse school bus expense up to $150 for public schools with Title I status and/or 50% or more student enrollment in the free/reduced lunch program.)

When do you offer Education Programs?
Field Trip Programs typical run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays during the school year. We offer a flexible start time of 9, 9:30 or 10:00, and end at 10:30, 11, 11:30, or 12. This does not include time for lunch. Our customized education programs can be offered most times during the school day.

When and where can we eat lunch?
Lunch happens after the program is over (Between 10:30 and 12:00). Weather permitting, your group may eat lunch at the top of the bluff around our fire circle, overlook, or picnic tables. We do offer a time to have a snack break during our morning programming if requested. (Food provided by the school/students.)

Does Bluff Lake have bathrooms?
Bluff Lake has three port-o-lets.  Two are located upstairs at near the shed and parking lot. The other is along the main trail near the boardwalk.

Does Bluff Lake have a drinking fountain?
No.  We have no running water, drinking fountains, or sinks.

Who owns Bluff Lake?
Bluff Lake is not owned by any city, state, or federal agency.  Bluff Lake is a private non-profit 501c3 organization that depends on grant funding, fee-based programs, and donations.
