Common Grackle

  • They are omnivores, eating insects, minnows, frogs, eggs, berries, seeds, grain, and even small birds and mice.

  • They nest in colonies.

  • Can be considered a pest by farmers because of their large numbers and fondness for grain and seeds.  They cause serious damage to corn, sunflower, and other crops.

  • They act as seed dispersers. They also help control populations of insects and other prey items they consume in the diet and in turn they provide food for local predators.

  • Practice “anting” behavior; they rub insects on their feathers to apply liquids such as formic acid secreted by the insects in order to get rid of parasites.

  • They can mimic the sounds of other birds or even humans, though not as precisely as the mockingbird.
