Colorado taxpayers who make a monetary contribution to promote childcare in Colorado may claim an income tax credit of 50% of the total contribution. Both corporate and individual donors may benefit from the Colorado Child Care Contribution Tax Credit.

  • Unless specified, donations are designated as General Operations funding and are unrestricted. These funds are incredibly important to our organization, as they support our mission and our general annual operating budget. Donors can request that their contributions be restricted to certain areas, such as our educational programming that serves over 8,000 youth annually, our scholarship fund that assists over 50 campers each summer, or Bluff Lake’s ongoing site restoration, which helps conserve our place of nature in the city.

  • The Hadley Smith Endowment Fund was established in 2020 by a $1,000,000 gift from the Smith family in memory of their daughter Hadley. The fund is held and invested by The Denver Foundation. Each year, Bluff Lake can withdraw 4.5% of the fund’s year-end balance (or $50,000, whichever is higher) to support building Bluff Lake’s significant long-term philanthropic efforts and imagining the future of our organization. Our endowment fund is an integral part of Bluff Lake’s planning for the future and growth of this organization, and its support means that we will be able to serve our community for generations to come.

If you wish to contribute to the endowment, please make a note on your donation, or contact Leila at leila@blufflake.org to ensure it is correctly allocated.

  • A gift in memory of a loved one who has passed away or a friend who has made an impact in your life is a wonderful thought for those to whom nature means so much. Did you know? Federal tax laws are changing on January 1, 2026.

Beginning in 2026, new tax rules will affect how individual donors can deduct charitable gifts if they itemize deductions on their personal income tax return. Changes include:

Donors can only claim a charitable deduction if their total annual giving exceeds 0.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). This new charitable deduction “floor” means that, for example, if a donor’s AGI is $100,000, they must donate more than $500 in a year before any of their charitable contributions become deductible.

There is a new 35% cap on the value of itemized deductions, including the charitable contribution deduction. This means that high earners in the 37% tax bracket will not get dollar-for-dollar value from the deduction for their charitable gifts.

The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act included a provision that allows itemizers to deduct cash donations up to 60% of AGI. With the new legislation, this provision is now made permanent.

The legislation introduces a new universal charitable deduction of $1,000 for individual taxpayers and $2,000 for married couples filing jointly—even if they do not itemize. This permanent deduction is available to anyone taking the standard deduction, making it easier for all donors to receive a tax benefit for giving. It is important to note that gifts made to donor-advised funds (DAFs), supporting organizations, or private foundations do not qualify for this new universal deduction.

Corporations can now deduct charitable gifts only if they exceed 1% of their taxable income. This new corporate “floor” includes a 10% cap, and a 5-year carry forward for unused deductions.

The National Philanthropic Trust has an article about these changes and how donors can navigate them with their giving this year and in the future. Check it out HERE! Bluff Lake Nature Center advises that donors discuss these changes with their financial advisors, as we cannot offer tax advice.
