Little Brown Bat

  • Can live to 6 or 7 years old and live in colonies of hundreds of thousands.

  • They will migrate hundreds of miles to get from their summer habitats to their winter ones where they hibernate in cave walls, attics and other dark places.

  • They are nocturnal and hunt most actively for a few hours after dusk. They must eat half their body weight in insects per night.

  • They can fly up to 40mph.

  • They are masters of echolocation, which is when animals estimate the location of objects and prey through sensing noise vibrations. They communicate by honking to warn others while feeding.

  • While they have poor vision, they are not blind.  Some bats can see in ultraviolet light and have excellent smell and hearing.

  • Predators: Variety of wild mammals, birds, snakes, and domestic cats.
