The Road so Far for BLNC’s Campus Improvements Project

On September 14, we announced the public phase of our campus improvements project with our closest Bluff Lake Friends and Family, but we have been working on the details of this project for over a year! We wanted to share some highlights from the work we have done!

Involving our Community

One of the most important parts of the conception of this project was directly asking the community what they wanted to see from the future of Bluff Lake. Staff put out and collected surveys asking what the community want to see.

Rachel, Bluff Lake Nature Center Executive Director, creating the survey area.

Bluff Lake Nature Center was created to serve the community and we wanted the next phase of Bluff Lake to be created by the same community it serves.

Here are some of the results:

  • Increased accessibility and an overall easier way to get down to the site.

  • Increased capacity for summer campers.

  • Welcome center with bathrooms and running water.

Increased Accessibility

After collecting the surveys we wanted to put the current state of the site to the test and invited a group out. We quickly saw that we could do much better.

With the help of the Colorado Health Foundation, we added a universally-accessible ramp and stairs down to the site plans as well as some much-needed additional accessibility improvements in the parking lot and entry.

Increased Capacity for Summer Campers

The additional facilities will create the opportunity for 200+ more summer campers to enjoy Bluff Lake’s summer programs due to increased child care license capacity. We are so excited to expand and grow these already loved programs!

Welcome Center

Staff currently work off site, there is no running water, and the only provided bathrooms are portables. These improvements will make the site more enjoyable and safer for visitors!

In the design plans there will be:

  • Public welcome lobby

  • Multipurpose spaces for public use

  • Outdoor classroom

  • Bathrooms

  • Staff offices and meeting areas

  • Workshop
